Dr. Todd was a member of numerous medical and professional organizations, giving credence to  the claim that he was ever seeking to improve his skills and increase his knowledge.  WhiDrTodd2le his credentials are impressive to say the least, they can only be used as a back-ground for the accomplishments of this truly remarkable man.

After graduating with highest honors from Meharry Medical College, he willingly served his country as a member of the Armed Forces. There, the Chief of Surgery quickly recognized the potential of this eager and talented young doctor. Following his discharge, upon the advice of the Army’s Chief of Surgery, Major Todd re-entered training at Meharry, studying under Dr. Matthew Walker. Dr. Walker appreciated the attitude and ability of this young surgeon, and worked to get him admitted to the University of Minnesota Graduate School of Cardiovascular Surgery. There he and Dr. Christian Barnard became close friends.

Upon his return to Nashville and Meharry, his quiet unassuming demeanor, coupled with his competent and caring attitude, quickly distinguished him as an outstanding doctor. He was not satisfied with mediocrity, and never ceased in his effort to help secure for Meharry, the best and most modern equipment possible.

Dr. Todd was the author of numerous publications and has many firsts to his credit. He was the first black cardiovascular surgeon to practice in Nashville, and headed the team that performed the first open heart surgery at Meharry in 1972.

Todd, Jr., was a man of achievement and genuine humility, void of selfish pursuits. He was a surgeon with the heart of the Good Samaritan.”
